Before the last Friday

by donnor

Jesters and Jokers gather round for it is time to let loose and explore what photography might bring. I want to propose a challenge, an exercise that I have students do when they are creatively a burnt piece of toast. Whatever your normal routine is, whatever you always look for, or whatever you always worry about technically with your equipment… simply throw it the hell out of the window this weekend!… This summer I have the pleasure of teaching the young photographers at the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops, and something they teach me every time is… There are no rules, none, nada, there is no correct color, there is no correct contrast, there is no correct exposure, essentially all of the mechanics of photography is shit on your spectacles that blocks your vision. These kids are so fun to be with, because they have no preconceived notion for what should or should not be a photograph, they do not talk themselves out of making a picture, and they do not worry about the significance of their subjects. In turn, with this mantra they always carry; their images become the most significant, because they are purely from the most important piece of equipment…

Their hearts.

So loosen up, and breath through your eyelids this weekend!
